Sending Money Out of the Gulf: What the Real Cost Is

Remittance pricing has two components and the visible one is rarely the larger. Comparing providers on fees alone can lead to a worse outcome.

Fee versus spread

A zero-fee transfer can still be expensive if the exchange rate applied is well off the mid-market rate. Compare the amount that lands, not the fee.

  • Note the mid-market rate at the time you quote.
  • Compare the final received amount across providers.
  • Ask whether the receiving bank deducts a charge.

Timing and cut-offs

Value dates, weekends and correspondent bank cut-offs affect arrival time more than the sending channel does.

Compliance checks

Larger or unusual transfers trigger source-of-funds checks. Having documentation ready avoids the transfer being held.

Recurring transfers

If you send regularly, a standing arrangement or a multi-currency account often beats repeated one-off transfers.
